While the industry may have oceans of data, Mr. Trivedi argues that while traditional techniques like machine learning give great insights, but they don’t scale up well—whereas GPU computing provides radically expanded computing power.

Mr. Trivedi proposed that industrial assets need AI to improve the productivity and efficiency of oil and gas equipment. Putting all the data gathered from a turbine or a compressor though a neural network can enable “deep learning,” which is essentially training the technology network to make its own inferences. Working together, BHGE and NVIDIA have created a complete set of workflows for this empowering capability.

We’re now working on reservoir simulation using GPU computing power to radically speed up the analysis of massive data sets—moving from 21 hours to 1.5 hours (over 10x faster than with CPU-based analysis).
