Overview

Overview

Gain a detailed understanding of downhole dysfunctions that could hinder your drilling efficiency with the MultiSense™ dynamics mapping system from Baker Hughes. A bit-based drilling dysfunction identification tool, the system provides data-driven downhole parameters that you can use to improve drilling performance and reduce damage to the bottomhole assembly (BHA).

 Multiple measurements, one module

The MultiSense dynamics mapping system incorporates a MultiSense™ module that is installed in the shank of the drill bit to capture true dynamic dysfunctions at the bit. The module can also be placed in subs and positioned anywhere along the drillstring.

The pressure-activated module comprises several accelerometers that measure axial, lateral, and torsional vibrations in the bit and along the drillstring. The acceleration measurements are processed using proprietary, field-proven algorithms to understand drilling dysfunctions including:

  • Stick/slip
  • Bit bounce
  • Whirl
  • Lateral acceleration
  • Axial acceleration

The module incorporates other accelerometers to measure revolutions per minute (RPM) and temperature of the drill bit.

MultiSense records data in two different operational modes—background and burst. The background data calculate and store average values for axial and lateral accelerations as well as maximum, minimum, and average rotary speeds. Samples of high-frequency, or burst, data are stored at consistent intervals.

The module is available in sizes including 4-1/2-in., 6-5/8-in., and 7-5/8-in. It can also be configured with API Regular, API IF, and Baker Hughes modular pin connections.

Maximize drilling efficiency

With the MultiSense module on your drillstring, you gain further insights of drilling dysfunctions by reviewing torsional and lateral vibration data and then correlating these data with time and depth. Use this correlation to optimize your BHA design and select the proper bit to maximize drilling efficiency through your challenging formations.

Ultimately, the MultiSense dynamics mapping system provides a digital drilling record that affords a detailed post-well analysis — an analysis you can use to lower your cost-per-foot while minimizing non-productive time (NPT) for multiple well applications.
